Spinal Imaging Department
What is the Spinal Imaging Department?
Here at West Midland Hospital’s spinal imaging department we offer prompt access to the latest diagnostic equipment to investigate further and help diagnose the cause of your back and neck pain.
Our imaging service is staffed by experienced professionals including consultant radiologists and diagnostic radiographers.
Our imaging services include:
- X-ray – provides images of your bone alignment. It can confirm arthritis, broken or displaced bones or, a tumour. Epidurograms are performed whereby dye is injected into your spine under X-ray guidance to obtain an outline of compressed nerve roots.
- MRI scanner – visits at least twice a week and delivers in depth scans of your discs, vertebrae and nerve roots. It diagnoses: prolapsed discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. It can also be used to rule out spinal infections or tumours.
- CT scanner – visits once a week and generates detailed and cross section images of your vertebrae. CT scans diagnose prolapsed discs or problems with bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments and blood vessels.
- ultrasound – pain relieving injections may be administered using ultrasound.
How to access
Private patients are welcome and can book a test directly with our imaging service. However, we do need a GP referral for diagnostic imaging to ensure we have the correct clinical information.
GPs can refer directly to use for MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound. We normally offer appointments within three to five working days and report back to your GP within five days.
